Let's Continue to Show our Gratitude to Our Volunteers

REMINDER OF THE WEEK: Remember to: 1. Sign-up for an item you can bring for the Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon; 2. Publish the changes for May 4th (full day Wednesay) and May 11th (being back to an Early Release day) in your newsletters.

A Special thank you:
- to the Math and Reading Learning Teams and the PTA Spring Book Fair Committee for such a successful Math and Reading Family Night last Thursday. We want to give a very special thank you to Teena VanBlaricom for working non-stop on Thursday to take care of every detail that helped enhance the Math and Reading Family Night experience for all. A number of parents and students took the time to give us positive feedback about the event.

- to all, especially to LouAnn and Melanie W., for one of the most successful Grandparents Day Lunheon we have hosted. It's great to hear "problems" like "we don't have enough chairs" during community outreach events such as this one because those are "happy problems" we can easily address. Again, thank you to all of the staff for the flexibility to make our guests feel especially welcome.

Introducing Another Great On-line Tool: Here is a great vocabulary-building on-line tool. It was a great hit when I launched it last Thursday night as one of the activities that families experienced during Math and Reading Family Night. It is pretty comprehensive, with an ELL component; it allows students to practice on meanings of prefixes and suffixes, root words, antonyms, synonyms, homonyms, syllabication, etc. It is mostly for grades 3-12, but I found that it also has activities for K-2. It can provide both extra practice and enrichment activities. One way I would use this if I was still in the classroom is to first use it as a teaching tool in reviewing concepts and teaching new ones. The link is (it is also one of the links on our blog): http://www.vocabulary.co.il/

REMINDER OF THE WEEK: Remember to publicize in your newsletters the dates for MSP Testing if you haven't already done so. Please do it multiple times.

Important Action Item To Be Done by Classroom Teachers by Wednesday Morning
To better prepare our students in handling a specific type of lockdown in which the intruder has gain entry to the building while they are out at recess, please discuss these steps with your students. You are the most suited staff member to deliver this message because you know how to taylor the information that is developmentally appropriate to your students. Feel free to consult with colleagues or administration if you're not sure how to filter or make some of the items age-appropriate.

As a follow-up, the playground team will show what the steps will look like during the students' recess times on Thursday and Friday. Then from here on out, the playground team will "conduct" this type of drill every month with each "recess group" so automaticity will kick in if the students ever need to implement this in a real life situation.

Please go over A-D with your students filtering the information to make it age-appropriate, especially for our K-2 students:

A. Once they hear 3 long whistle blows, they must do the following:
1. Stop - what they are doing immediately.
2. Look - where the whistle sound is coming or came from.
3. Listen - for directions on how they will move from our campus to Ballou for
safety. They may also need to observe directions that are given in hand
gesture.

B. If they are in the bathroom when they hear the words/prompt, "We are in lockdown:"
1. If they are done doing their business and they are able to get-out of the
bathroom within the first 5 seconds they hear the lockdown announcment, they
need to go to the nearest classroom (share that certain teachers whose
classrooms are near bathrooms have been designated as "sweepers" so they
expect those adults to check for students in the bathroom during emergency
situations like lockdown.

2. If they are in the middle of doing their business that will prevent them from
going to the the nearest classroom right after they hear that we are in
lockdown, they can go/stay in the bathroom and stay really quiet and be
still as much as possible.

C. If they find themselves not being able to go or be with a group or take shelter in a classroom (add that this step is also applicable outside of the school (example: walking to/from school), always move (run) opposite the direction of the threat.

D. If they find themselves cornered by the intruder, tell them that they need to do everything they can to get away, which may include fighting and/or hurting the intruder. Add that this step is applicable outside of the school (i.e. home).

Grades 3-6 Teachers: Have you set-up your IXL Math Account for your class? If not, how can we help you set it up? As we have mentioned earlier, IXL Math is another supplemental tool that has been paid for by the Student Learning Department for your students to use. It is important that we use all available resources/tools to help our students meet standards. Char, Almai and Michelle are also here to help you use these available math resources (the same is true in Reading, only instead of Michelle, it would be Heather that can help). We just need you to let us know in what content area and how we may be of help to you and the students.

Message from ITC Regarding "New" Email (Outlook): For some of you, today (Monday) may the first time you're using your email since we've migrated to Outlook from Groupwise Novell. If you you see an authentication window (it has keys icon and you'll see your email address as the username), ITC is asking that you call the Help Desk at 8600 and tell them that you're "being asked for authentication when you're trying to use Outlook 2010 Client." They'll add you to the "open ticket" so your computer can be updated. Not all users will experience this because it is related to some specific computers only.
