Firgrove Elementary Hawk Happenings is a weekly publication for our dedicated and hard-working staff whose mission states, "Together as a community, we will build an educational foundation to help all learners realize their full potential and achieve their hopes and dreams."
WE are committed to continue to strive to be better at practicing the Seven Culturally Responsive Classroom Principles, hence:
- We affirm our students in their cultural connections.
- We strive to be personally inviting.
- We provide learning environments that are physically and culturally inviting.
- We reinforce all students for academic development.
- We make instructional changes to honor and accommodate the differences in all our students.
- We manage our classrooms with firm, consistent yet loving control.
- We model and provide interaction opportunities that stress both collectivity as well as individuality.

We know that there are two important after-school events on Feb. 22nd, Tuesday:
1. Arts and Culture PSD-sponsored Professional Development (Focus Culture: Ecuador), 4:30-7:30 PM, Rm 15 - as a school applying for the Gold Grant from ODA, we committed to have our staff attend a certain amount of Professional Development in this area.
2. PTA Ram Night at the Sunrise Village location, 5-9 PM (staff sign-up poster for the following shifts was posted: 5-7 PM and 7-9 PM last Monday, the day we were notified of the date for Ram Night ) - we value parent partnership and one of the ways we've shown that is by attending these events whenever and as much as we're able.
Attend what you're able or what you've already committed yourself, and thank you in advance to those who will attend any or both of the events.

REPEATED POST:
February is Black History Month. Here are little known facts about Black History Month:
- originated from the work of Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), the second African American who earned a doctorate from Harvard, with W.E.B. Du Bois being the first
- in 1915, Woodson and four others created an organization called Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) which published the "Journal of Negro History"
- Woodson realized that most textbooks ignored the history and achievements of blacks, so in addition to the journal, he promoted the idea of "Negro History Week" which was held during the second week of February in 1926. Woodson chose this particular week because it included the birthdays of two important men in Black American History: President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas.
- in 1976, the Negro History Week expanded to the entire month of February
