REPEATED POST:
February is Black History Month. Here are little known facts about Black History Month:
- originated from the work of Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), the second African American who earned a doctorate from Harvard, with W.E.B. Du Bois being the first
- in 1915, Woodson and four others created an organization called Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) which published the "Journal of Negro History"
- Woodson realized that most textbooks ignored the history and achievements of blacks, so in addition to the journal, he promoted the idea of "Negro History Week" which was held during the second week of February in 1926. Woodson chose this particular week because it included the birthdays of two important men in Black American History: President Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglas.
- in 1976, the Negro History Week expanded to the entire month of February

Include a very brief description so that our office team can answer the basic questions about it when they get a parent call inquiring about the event. One idea is stapling the newsletter or the flier you're sending home to the master calendar form.
- Thank you for providing the office (LouAnn) a copy of your classroom newsletters. Please continue to do so. At minimum, each teacher should be sending a newsletter once a month.
- Please include in your next newsletter two things: 1. the rescheduled Grandparents Day, and 2. March 7th is a Non-school/Teacher Training Day.
