REMINDER OF THE WEEK: Remember to publicize in your newsletters the dates for MSP Testing if you haven't already done so. Please do it multiple times.

Important Action Item To Be Done by Classroom Teachers by Wednesday Morning
To better prepare our students in handling a specific type of lockdown in which the intruder has gain entry to the building while they are out at recess, please discuss these steps with your students. You are the most suited staff member to deliver this message because you know how to taylor the information that is developmentally appropriate to your students. Feel free to consult with colleagues or administration if you're not sure how to filter or make some of the items age-appropriate.

As a follow-up, the playground team will show what the steps will look like during the students' recess times on Thursday and Friday. Then from here on out, the playground team will "conduct" this type of drill every month with each "recess group" so automaticity will kick in if the students ever need to implement this in a real life situation.

Please go over A-D with your students filtering the information to make it age-appropriate, especially for our K-2 students:

A. Once they hear 3 long whistle blows, they must do the following:
1. Stop - what they are doing immediately.
2. Look - where the whistle sound is coming or came from.
3. Listen - for directions on how they will move from our campus to Ballou for
safety. They may also need to observe directions that are given in hand
gesture.

B. If they are in the bathroom when they hear the words/prompt, "We are in lockdown:"
1. If they are done doing their business and they are able to get-out of the
bathroom within the first 5 seconds they hear the lockdown announcment, they
need to go to the nearest classroom (share that certain teachers whose
classrooms are near bathrooms have been designated as "sweepers" so they
expect those adults to check for students in the bathroom during emergency
situations like lockdown.

2. If they are in the middle of doing their business that will prevent them from
going to the the nearest classroom right after they hear that we are in
lockdown, they can go/stay in the bathroom and stay really quiet and be
still as much as possible.

C. If they find themselves not being able to go or be with a group or take shelter in a classroom (add that this step is also applicable outside of the school (example: walking to/from school), always move (run) opposite the direction of the threat.

D. If they find themselves cornered by the intruder, tell them that they need to do everything they can to get away, which may include fighting and/or hurting the intruder. Add that this step is applicable outside of the school (i.e. home).
